Economic Development Summit preparing Highlands to prosper

February 15, 2010

HIGHLANDS — The Highlands Economic Development Summit: It’s All About Jobs is scheduled for Thursday, February, 25 from 1 until 5 p.m. in the Estes Williams Business Center at the Leslie Town Centre located at 1 West First Street in Cookeville.

“It is through an educated workforce that we will attract 21st century jobs to the region,” said Dr. Susan Elkins, vice president of Extended Programs & Regional Development at Tennessee Tech University and Highlands Workforce Development and Education Committee chair. “The jobs of the future are just around the corner and we have to take bigger and bolder actions now to ensure our workforce is prepared.”

Added Vice President of Economic Development for the Highlands Lillian Hartgrove, “Working together is the way to make a difference and the Summit is the vehicle for the right people to be at the table to decide the future for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  We cannot wait another day to begin the dialog with each other.  We are the ones that will make this happen and we are the ones who will build a brighter future for our children.”

The summit is open to anyone interested in attending, specifically those in leadership at the state and local government level, business leaders, educators, and chambers of commerce.

The summit will be facilitated by Dr. Robert Bell, president of Tennessee Tech University, with Bill Frederick, CEO and president of Wadley Donovan GrowthTech LLC, one of the nation’s leading corporate location and economic development firms, and Brad Smith, executive director of the State Collaborative On Reforming Education (SCORE) program, as keynote speakers.

Frederick will present the labor market findings completed for the Highlands in October 2009 and will update the audience on the site selection process. His report will provide business leaders, educators and elected officials insight to improve and expand opportunities in the region.

Smith will provide an overview of the SCORE program, “A Roadmap to Success: A Plan to Make Tennessee Schools #1 in the Southeast within Five Years.” He will also cover the role groups can play in improving our schools.  SCORE is chaired by William H. Frist, former Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate.

“Among SCORE’s major goals are developing a strategic plan for K-12 education reform via a statewide committee of key stakeholders and launching a number of project teams to initiate state and local education projects. This also aligns with the work of the Highlands Workforce Development and Education Committee,” said Dr. Kathleen Airhart, director of Putnam County Schools and member of the committee.

To conclude the summit, Elkins will provide important updates and facilitate a question and answer session.

To reserve your spot for this important summit, please RSVP by February 19 to Debbie Adams at 931-526-2211 or dadams@cookevillechamber.com.
