Highlands Overview

The Highlands of Tennessee is a region that was born when Overton, Putnam and White counties developed a strategic plan to accelerate economic and community development in their respective communities. The plan, Highlands Initiative, is administered by the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, which is guided by a tri-county Highlands Initiative Steering Committee. The plan has raised more than $2 million from private and public sectors. Highlands of Tennessee speaks literally of the region's mountains and figuratively of the higher economic level toward which its citizens climb.

Putnam County has a population of more than 70,000. It is the major center of finance, trade, employment, transportation, health care and education in the region. Cookeville, the Highlands' largest city, as well as the cities of Algood, Baxter and Monterey, are located within the county's 401 square miles. Putnam County Demographics
