The Backdoor Playhouse
The Tennessee Tech Players have been a regular feature at TTU for nearly 50 years. For most of that time, the campus drama troupe has made its home at the Backdoor Playhouse, located in the rear of the Jere Whitson Memorial Building. Mark Creter, artistic director at the Playhouse, says he tries to produce shoes that “always give the public something unexpected”—and that means presenting critically acclaimed contemporary plays as well as modern twists on classic comedies and dramas. Creter himself has won an Intellectual Freedom Award from the Tennessee Council of Teachers of English for bringing Eve Ensler’s controversial but Obie award-winning play “Vagina Monologues” to Cookeville audiences.
