Cookeville Regional Medical Center

At the heart of that medical community is the 56-year-old, 247-bed Cookeville Regional Medical Center. It has become the premier healthcare provider for many residents.

From the modern obstetrics unit to the comprehensive heart and cancer services, Cookeville Regional provides quality healthcare close to home. The combination of state-of-the-art equipment, knowledgeable specialists, and caring healthcare professionals has resulted in a medical center that has brought the city to the country and offers services that traditionally are available only in larger, metropolitan areas.

A regional referral center

"Over the years, Cookeville Regional has really evolved to the regional referral center that it is today," says CEO Bernie Mattingly. "We can truly provide the kind of high quality care that you would only expect to see in larger cities right here at home. Our patients very rarely have to travel long distances to find the medical services they need, no matter what their stage in life."

Specialties, emergencies and other services

Specialties include: allergy/asthma, anesthesiology, cardiology, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, cardiothoracic (open heart) surgery, critical care, dentistry, dermatology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, family practice, gastroenterology, general surgery, hematology, internal medicine, medical and radiation oncology, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology (ENT), pathology, pediatric cardiology, pediatrics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatric surgery, psychiatry, pulmonology, radiology, sleep medicine, sports medicine, thoracic surgery, urology, and vascular surgery.

In addition to specialty services, Cookeville Regional offers a number of other facilities and programs for the Upper Cumberland. Twenty-four-hour emergency services with private rooms for all patients are there to ensure comfort and quality care.

The emergency room at Cookeville Regional offers a unique feature. It is divided into two units: clinic and trauma. The clinic unit allows quicker, more efficient service for minor illnesses, and the trauma unit provides more care for those patients requiring more extensive medical treatment.

The facilities at Cookeville Regional include a 16-bed intensive care unit for critically ill patients, a separate six-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit for open-heart patients and acutely ill patients with heart conditions, specialized nursing units for cardiovascular, neurological, and pulmonary health concerns, a 31-bed ambulatory surgery center, and a 20-bed inpatient rehabilitation center.

Additional services include Lifeline, a personal emergency response service for the chronically ill, elderly, or disabled. A sports medicine program provides certified athletic trainers to area high schools. These trainers specialize in prevention and treatment for sports-related injuries. Highland Rim Home Health offers a number of services that allow patients to remain at home while receiving the medical care and support they need.

The physicians and specialists

With more than 120 physicians providing services in 35 specialty areas, Cookeville Regional is dedicated to quality healthcare. Physicians and specialists are committed to continued learning and patient care. The proof: More than 94 percent of the physicians are board certified. Board certification is not a requirement for physicians, but it is a voluntary pursuit of additional training and education in a specialty area. Nearly one-fourth of the physicians are board certified in more than one specialty area.

Cookeville Regional provides world-class care to the community. The physicians come to Cookeville from 30 states across the U.S. and from 13 countries across the globe. This diversification in training and education has resulted in a team of highly trained and specialized physicians.

Special services

Cookeville Regional has several specialty centers to meet the health and wellness needs of the region.

"It has been our mission at Cookeville Regional to serve the needs of our population," says Mattingly. "To that end we have invested both time and money in ensuring cutting edge, high quality healthcare in the specialized areas that benefit our community."

The Heart Center

The Heart Center at Cookeville Regional provides a full range of services to care for the needs of heart patients at every step of their treatment. Some of the area's top cardiac specialists, a veteran open heart surgery team, and a specially trained nursing staff provide care ranging from consultation to surgery to recovery to rehabilitation.

Since 1994, the Heart Team has performed more than 15,000 heart catheterizations, nearly 1,500 open heart surgeries, and a full range of countless other cardiac procedures and services. With more than 100 years of combined expertise in heart care, the entire cardiac staff works together as a highly skilled, precisely coordinated team in an environment where the patient always comes first.

The Cancer Center

The Cancer Center at Cookeville Regional is a community-based cancer program containing all the elements of a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care based on the concept that education, prevention, and early detection of cancer will achieve optimal patient outcomes.

The Cancer Center seeks to acquire the most effective, up-to-date treatment options available for its patients. Examples: Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and B-Mode Acquisition and Targeting Ultrasound System (BAT). Cookeville Regional is one of only a few hundred facilities in the nation to offer both of these technologies. PET/CT imaging services now available can detect cancer as small as 4mm, the size of a BB.

The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted approval with commendation to The Cancer Center at Cookeville Regional. It is one of 1,500 centers nationwide to gain approval for its programs, and it joins only 27 percent of all cancer programs surveyed to achieve the approval with commendation status.

The Women's Center

The region's resource for women's health issues, The Women's Center at Cookeville Regional, provides specialized imaging services including mammography and non-invasive stereotactic breast biopsies. Newly installed mammography equipment allows for a softer, more comfortable mammogram. The Women's Center has also added a DEXA bone densitometry unit, which is today's established gold standard for measuring bone mineral density to help in diagnosing osteoporosis.

The Spine Center

The Spine Center at Cookeville Regional offers patients cutting edge knowledge and technology with treatment options provided by highly qualified specialists. Those suffering from back pain and spine disorders can be treated close to home.

Services include complex spine reconstruction, outpatient disk surgery, and minimally invasive treatment of spinal fractures. With the new minimally invasive treatments, patients are back to their lives faster, easier, and with less pain.

The Rehabilitation Center and Outpatient Rehabilitation Center

Located a block from the Cookeville Regional campus, The Rehabilitation Center is a 20-bed acute care inpatient unit providing assessment, treatment, education, and follow up to patients needing physical, occupational, and speech therapy. The center includes a full service gymnasium, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and areas designated as "Activity of Daily Living" to assist patients in their recovery. The hospital's outpatient rehabilitation center is also located here.

The Imaging Center

The Imaging Center at Cookeville Regional offers a comprehensive range of imaging services — x-ray, ultrasound, mammography, nuclear medicine, CT, MRI, PET/CT, and angiography. With a newly renovated facility and state-of-the-art equipment, the Imaging Center is staffed with four radiologists trained in specialized areas of radiology as well as highly trained radiologic technologists.

The Birthing Center

No hospital is complete without a place to welcome life into the world. The Birthing Center at Cookeville Regional does just that, more than 1,000 times a year. The center focuses on the needs of new mothers by providing seven private and spacious labor, delivery, and recovery rooms, 12 private postpartum rooms, two cesarean surgical suites, and a state-of-the-art nursery. Prenatal, childbirth, and infant care classes are also provided through The Birthing Center. Brother, sister, and baby classes are also available for siblings.

The Diabetes Center

One of the largest health concerns in the Upper Cumberland is diabetes. Located in the Cookeville Mall, The Diabetes Center at Cookeville Regional offers education programs that teach self-management skills to patients with diabetes and their families. Diabetes often requires patients to make changes in both their lifestyle and their diet. The Diabetes Center works to make that transition easier by teaching patients how to care for themselves and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The Community Wellness Center

Cookeville Regional provides cost-effective, quality care along with preventative and wellness education to the community. Businesses, churches, and industries can benefit from educational programs, health fairs, and corporate physicals through The Community Wellness Center at Cookeville Regional.

What customers say

Cookeville Regional continually strives to bring the best care close to home for the patients of the Upper Cumberland. In pursuit of this goal, the hospital participates in a survey system where patients rate the quality of their care. The results are then compared against hospitals across the nation.

The patients of Cookeville Regional have rated it in the top 25 percent of hospitals nationwide in patient satisfaction, with several departments and centers ranking even higher in their individual categories.

"Changes in technology and equipment are pointless if you don't maintain that personal connection," says Mattingly. "It is vitally important to us to keep that personal attention and touch that convey warmth and comfort to our patients. Technology can take you only so far without compassion."

Keeping it close to home

Cookeville Regional continues to monitor the pulse of the Upper Cumberland and react proactively to the health needs of the community.

"We are not about to slow down," says Mattingly. "Thousands of patients come here each year, and we will continue to expand to meet their health needs in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible."

Expanding to the future

The hospital is planning a number of expansion projects including an outpatient imaging center, a new six-floor tower with more private rooms and services for patients, and an expansion of The Cancer Center.
